Concrete cancer

Buyer beware ! Purchasing a unit in a complex with balconies affected by concrete cancer can cost you thousands.  As a part owner you would be expected to pay a portion of any costs to repair or replace the affected balconies!

Concrete cancer

The familiar sight of concrete spalling due to the corrosion of the steel reinforcing can be caused by a
number of factors.
These include:
- Poor quality concrete (incorrect water/cement ratio, porosity, poor compaction)
- Poor placement of rebar (too close to surface)
- Carbonation (alkalinity of concrete is reduced over time causing steel rebar to become corroded.
- Chloride penetration of concrete in marine environments.
